The peridot gemstone is an intriguing stone whose color ranges from a deep vivid green to a light yellow green, transparent and wonderfully reflective due to its many facets.  It is the birthstone for August and is associated with the lively greens of summer.

The peridot is one of the oldest gemstones known  .Recorded history reports it mined on St. Johns Island as early as 1500 B.C.E., and its use both as talisman and jewelry is recorded throughout Egyptian history.  Cleopatra is said to have worn the peridot instead of emeralds, but really, who knows? What we do know is that the peridot is astrikingly beautiful gemstone that is well-suited for all styles and occasions.

The peridot is not mined as most gemstones, close to the surface, but is found deep underground, like a diamond.  It’s hardness ranges between 6.5 and 7, so it is moderately hard but care should still be taken to wash the dust from the stone before polishing. 

Peridot is one of the stones believed to have been inlaid in the breastplate of the high priest, Aaron, whose story is found in the book of Exodus.  The stone has a history of mysticism, and was used as a talisman in ancient times. It was thought to promote strong relationships and ward off evil spirits.  Pliny the Elder suggested that for the talisman to work, the stone should be worn on the right arm.  If worn properly the peridot would help dreams come to fruition, attract the love of one’s life, and enable one to sleep like a baby.
